Visit: Villa Borghese, P.zzale del Museo Borghese, 00155 Rome Italy

The best way for us to describe the Villa Borghese gardens is:

As the keeper of the Villa Borghese Pinciana, I publicly declare: whoever you are, providing to be a freeman, fear no hindrance here; go where you like, ask what you wish; leave when you want. Everything you see was made more for the guest than for its landlord. In the golden century, when peaceful years made any thing splendid for the refined ones, the landlord forbade all iron rules for the guest.

Let good faith be the only rule for our friend.

But if someone, consciously and purposely, by wickedness and deceit, was to break the golden rules of courtesy, be alert, the angry keeper may break these friendly words on your head.

(Latin inscription carved on marble plate at Villa Borghese).

We will visit one of the world’s most beautiful art museum hosting the works of extraordinary artists such as Bernini, Caravaggio, Canova and Raffaello. The gallery’s most important sculptures and paintings are from Cardinal Scipione Borghese’s collection (1579 - 1633), he was the son of Ortensia Borghese, sister of both Pope Paul V and Francesco Caffarelli.

We’ll admire Caravaggio’s most important paintings, among which “Young sick Bacchus” and “ Boy with a basket of fruit”; Bernini and Canova’s magnificent sculptures’ collection, boasting works like “Apollo and Daphne”, “David”, “The rape of Preserpina” and “Paolina Bonaparte”. Of course we won’t miss out on Raffaello’s “Entombment of Christ”.

My wife and I have been to the Borghese Museum a few times. We never had a guided tour until this one. The first time in the late 70s when you could find yourself the only visitor in a room. Not so anymore! Unbelievably crowded. The place has become so crowded that you have to do some sort of scheduled entry. You are only allowed 2 hours in the museum, which I would say is a minimum. The guide, Frederico, obviously knowledgeable and passionate about the art. He really added a lot to the tour and I would encourage anyone to get a guide.

This is a must see on a visit to Rome. The group was small enough and our guide very knowledgeable and passionate about the art on display. Although not perfectly fluent in English, we found his skills more than adequate and his accent quite charming. The stated meeting place is not 100% clear (as stated in some reviews we read before going) so this was not a problem. Meeting place is in front of the gallery's main entrance. There are a number of tour operators, so look for the signs they hold aloft. Note that NO bags are allowed inside, this includes handbags, backpacks and any other bag you can think of. There is a storage facility where you can check it in (some groups make use of a cage for the groups' things). Also NO photography allowed inside. Time inside is limited to 2 hours, which really only allows time to see the highlights.

Villa Borghese is a place to come back every time you visit Rome. For me is the third time and for sure I will come back - every time I want to leave the place with a feeling about these masterpieces that will follow me till the next visit. This time the guide - Mattia - add more knowledge about Bernini statues and about some paintings. Thank you Mattia for your very professional presentation of a person that graduated History of the Arts at University

The museum was spectacular and entry/exit was well organized. The tour guide's English was not adequate and he didn't seem to be able to handle the size of the group. He did not have an overall approach or theme to the tour, and assumed some significant knowledge by the group of Italian art. The nature of how tours are organized at this location is that they rush you through to make room for the next group. So ... if you love Italian art and know something about the collection, this is an amazing place to visit. But don't count on the guide to add much to your experience.

On Wednesday, March 27th my friend and I had amazing fortuna in that the tour we booked ended up to be just for us 2! Federico Perri was our guide and his knowledge and passion for art is unsurpassable. He guided us through the crowded galleries and had pre selected the works he wanted to share with us. Both my friend and I walked away with a new found respect for sculpture and Bernini. The way he demonstrated the works of Caravaggio was particularly masterful in that he knew all bout the artist's life and how his works reflected various aspects of his life We both agreed that Federico's knowledge about the Borghese family and their role in history helped us understand the works we viewed with Federico. Our lives have been forever enriched because of the two hours we spent with this very talented and gifted guide, This tour was the highlight of our trip to Rome, Thank you Viator and Federico for a wonderful experience.
